Fall Protection Legislation Review

  • Determine the desired competencies from the Alberta OHS Legislation
  • Inspect their equipment following CSA approvals relating to Fall Protection equipment
  • Inspect their equipment following Manufacture specific information
  • recognize when and what type of fall protection is required within the Province of Alberta
  • identify the approvals necessary for fall protection equipment
  • Inspect basic fall protection equipment following applicable provincial legislation, manufacture recommendations, CSA standards and individual company special requirement. Inspection will include but not limited to:
    • anchor
    • body harness
    • connector
    • lanyard
    • carabineer
    • suspension trauma equipment
  • draw and identify component ratings of a
    • travel restraint system
    • fall arrest system
    • vertical life line fall arrest system
    • horizontal fall arrest system
  • calculate total fall clearance, free fall distance and swing fall limits
  • recognize suspension trauma
  • basic equipment used in fall protection such as Manlifts, scissor lifts, bucket trucks, cranes and hoists

The course will also ensure compliance to Part 9 Section 141 of the Alberta OHS Code

141(1) An employer must ensure that a worker is trained in the safe use of the fall protection system before allowing the worker to work in an area where a fall protection system must be used.

141(2) The training referred to in subsection (1) must include the following:
(a) a review of current Alberta legislation pertaining to fall protection;
(b) an understanding of what a fall protection plan is;
(c) fall protection methods a worker is required to use at a work site;
(d) identification of fall hazards;
(e) assessment and selection of specific anchors that the worker may use;
(f) instructions for the correct use of connecting hardware
(g) information about the effect of a fall on the human body, including maximum arresting force, the purpose of shock and energy absorbers, swing fall, free fall
(h) pre‐use inspection;
(i) emergency response procedures to be used at the work site, if necessary; and
(j) practice in
(i) inspecting, fitting, adjusting and connecting fall protection systems and components, and (ii) emergency response procedures.
 
141(3) In addition to the training described in subsection (2), an employer must ensure that a worker is made aware of the fall hazards particular to that work site and the steps being taken to eliminate or control those hazards.
 
Note this course is for site specific regulation review, and the ability to perform Fall Protection will be done in a safe classroom setting only.  It is recommended that the participant is then assessed by the organization with a qualified instructor from their facility to assess their competence in Fall Protection
