AWP: Bucket Truck

Level I - Theory

• locate, read and comprehend all applicable legislation and standards pertaining to Man Lifts including Part 19 titled “Powered Mobile Equipment of the Alberta Occupational Health and Safety code
• read and comprehend all applicable information contained within the manufacture’s operator manual
• read and comprehend the information contained within this manual and any handouts, videos and support materials
• identify all major components of the Bucket Truck
• inspect all of the equipment’s components ensuring that they comply with the manufacture’s recommendations
• make certain that the unit has been maintained and lubed according to manufacturer’s recommendations
• perform a pre-operational inspection of the unit following manufactures recommendations
• interpret and complete the daily log book
• determine the load limitations of the unit including the weight of the workers, the weight of the tools and the stress placed on the unit while working from the platform
• describe the limitations of the unit including stability, working from various heights and working environment
• describe the capabilities of the unit including platform types, machines specific safety features and operating principles

Level II - Practical

Upon successful completion of the theory portion (Level I) of the Bucket Truck operator program; participants will be evaluated on the manner that they operate their Bucket Truck.  The trainee will be evaluated by the instructor using a check list that contains recommendations from the manufacture, through industry best work practices and through Alberta regulations.

• prepare for work by conducting a hazard assessment, establishing effective controls, preparation of an emergency plan
• operate the unit in a safe manner while driving on a variety of terrains at varying heights and conditions
• demonstrate how to operate the unit from the lower control station and using emergency power
• shut down the unit after work has been completed in a safe manner ensuring public and other worker security and safety
