  • Review of the applicable standards/ current practices and procedures; IEEE Standards #80, CEC, OHS BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan, CSAZ462 etc.
  • Review of basic electrical theory, jargon and industry terminology, symbols and single line information
  • Review how electrical faults and accidents can occur in normal and abnormal situations
  • Review how the difference in potential, amount of current available, the path taken by the current, operating frequency including DC currents and preventative maintenance can have either have a positive or negative effect on worker/ equipment/ public safety.
  • Review of the potential effects of electromagnetic fields from electrical equipment and cable systems
  • Recognizing hazards associated with low/ medium and high voltage electrical work such as power transformers, switchgear, disconnect switches, relay systems, interlock schemes, etc.
  • Potential effects of electrical energy on people and equipment as related to shock hazards.
  • Response strategies while working around electrical lines and equipment under normal and under abnormal situations
  • Review of how arc flash is developed within electrical equipment and review the potential effects on workers/ public and equipment
  • Review of how arc blast is developed within electrical equipment and review the potential effects on people and equipment
  • Determine shock, arc flash, arc blast and limits of approach boundary distances with low/ medium and high voltage electrical work as per industry standards and work practices (CSA Z462; NFPA 70e; OHS)
  • Ascertain typical hazards associated within the prohibited, restricted, and limited approach zones as per industry standards and work practices (CSA Z462; NFPA 70e; OHS)
  • Review of the Occupational Health and Safety legislation Limits of approach tables as per OHS/  WHS.
  • Establishing engineering, administrative and PPE controls for working near or on high voltage electrical equipment and lines and how to effectively reduce the hazards associated with shock, arc flash and arc blast.
  • Effectiveness and limitations of PPE while working around medium-high voltage (480v; 600 volt; 4160v; 15kV; 240 kV)
  • How to safely respond to emergency situations involving high voltage electricity such as wire down across a crane, cutting cable while working on rapid transit equipment, or accidental contact with a live service while performing daily work such as metering or infra-red inspection
  • Recognizing methods to reduce or to eliminate the effects of STEP, Touch, Transferred and Mesh potentials based on industry best work practices and procedures; IEEE Standard #80, CEC, CSA, OHS BC, Alberta and Saskatchewan, etc.
  • Review of ohms law, Dalziel equation and determining the maximum amount of current/ voltage a worker can be accidentally exposed to
  • Selecting, testing, inspecting, using and maintaining insulated rubber gloves (all classes)
